Whether it’s the planet Earth rotating around the Sun or shift workers who move between day and night, our time is shaped by a variety of spinning events. Certain are obvious, while others aren’t.

Most people are aware for instance that the Earth revolves around its axis once every 24 hours. What’s less well known is that the speed of this rotation fluctuates in a small amount that scientists have been able determine using atomic clocks. This makes the sun’s day feel longer or shorter than it actually is. Atomic clocks need to adjust the time periodically to adjust for this. This change is known as a leap second.

The Coriolis effect is another example of a rotational event. It is the regular wobbling that occurs as the Earth’s rotating pole revolves around the Sun. This is the reason for the weather patterns and explains why rides in fun parks such as carousels and Ferris wheels must have a sturdy side to the side bar known as an axle.

Job rotation also allows employees to be exposed in different work environments and roles, which can increase their knowledge and skills as well as professional growth. However frequent shift changes can sometimes disrupt team dynamics and lead to stress as employees try to adapt to changing conditions. Employers can implement strategies such as open communication and wellness programs in order to create a healthy working environment for their employees. They can also use scheduling software to streamline shift changes.
